THE MOUNTAIN GUIDES ARCO TRENTINO DOLOMITES ITALY
The history of the alpine guides Arco in Trentino began with the birth of alpinism
in the Dolomites. Its protagonists are explorers from England, Germany, Austria and local mountain guides. The
mountain guide' s profession has been subject to changes and development. Until the end of the 18th century they
were the guides of rich aristocrats keen on granting their name to a famous peak or wall. The modern alpine guide
however, is a professional with not only a profound knowledge of the manifold traditional and modern alpine
techniques but is also an expert in nature, culture and history. In those days and at present, the mountain
guides are the authors of national and international alpine history. The Trentino Alpine Guide Association is
preparing the guides for their professional life. In Trentino 200 mountain guides are registered; they are being
distributed among 12 alpine schools and/or other types of guides' associations. Practically in each valley of
Trentino you can find an association of mountain guides School which can provide information and advice. The
alpine schools or guides' associations are offering a vast range of activities and courses which can be booked
directly. With a mountain guide on your side, a day in the mountains, a simple excursion through the forests of
our National Parks or a climbing tour in the Dolomites, will become an unforgettable experience. The mountain
guides of Trentino are publishing an annual program offering daily or weekly excursions/events which are suitable
for everyone who has already been in the mountains but is mainly addressing those who want to make first contact
with them. The program includes hiking, excursions, mountaineering and trekking tours, rock climbing instruction,
high alpine treks, rock climbing courses, alpine base courses, canyoning or excursions in the National Parks with
special park guides.

International Union of Associations of Mountain Guides
Our membership of the International Union of Associations of Mountain Guides (IFMGA ), followed, along with
increased training and rigorous assessment. This membership, shared at present with guides from sixteen other
countries, gives our Mountain Guides absolute equivalence with Guides in Alpine countries and throughout the
world. The award of the International Guides Carnet demands the highest standards of skill and professionalism in
all aspects of mountaineering.
The Scope of Guiding
In any year the range of mountain activities offered by Guides is staggering. Mountain Guides safely and
successfully lead groups to the highest and most remote mountains on earth. Some Guides specialize in Alpine
mountaineering whilst others work mainly with young people, senior climbers or women. Guides are able to provide
group instruction and personal guiding at every level from easy climbs, walks and scrambles to the most demanding
ascents at home and abroad all year round. Guides also offer instruction and guiding in snow and ice climbing as
well as ski mountaineering and off-piste skiing. Many Guides offer Sport Climbing throughout Europe whilst on
Alps rock and indoor walls instruction and guiding is always available. Guides are able to work at all levels
making sure that the walking party will receive the same care and exclusive attention as someone who wants to
find their limits on rock, ice or at altitude.
Beyond Guiding
Guides are increasingly involved in equipment design, development and testing, others act as consultants or
assist in filming. Many offer lectures, write on mountain related matters and give technical advice. Mountain
Guiding is not only a profession but is also a vocation. Our members are united by their love of the mountain
environment and their common aim. This is to assist others, their clients, to realize their mountain dreams and
to find the exuberant joy, the wonderful unforgettable days which are so inseparable from the game of
mountaineering at whatever level we wish to play. Guides cannot remove all danger from an activity but with their
great depth of knowledge and continually updated training they can certainly ensure that any normal risks are
contained, so that their companions can freely savour the full scope of the experience offered.
INFORMATIONS FOR ROCK CLIMBING COURSES
Year after year the Northern area of the Gardalake (Arco) is presenting itself as the
freeclimber' s capital. Responsible for this success are the facts that the area is offering walls of up to 1.200
m altitude as well as rocks and boulders suitable for rock climbing. The limestone' s structures allow to
perform safely and eleganty all kinds of rock climbing techniques. The mediterranean climate, mild in winter and
refreshing in summer, permits each kind of climbing instruction almost throughout the whole year.
The participation in a climbing course is independent of age and does not require special physical conditions. If
you love outdoor activities and, if you are anxious to discover something 'new', this is the right course for
you. Climbing may be considered as one of the most comprehensive types of sport as you do not only need almost
all of your body fibers but also your brain.
ROCK CLIMBING COURSE FOR BEGINNERS
A short explanation:
The climbing courses will take place in one of the many rock climbing areas around Arco. On natural vertical rock
walls (equipped with SPIT) the participants are learning to climb by using the "top-rope" system on single pitch
routes. It permits the climber to "fall" in any moment and all that can happen is, that the climber remains
'hanging' on the rope - a rope which has a capacity of up to 2.000 kg - this is a maximum of security. One day of
climbing has a duration of approx. 4 to 5 hours. A licensed Mountain Guide will teach knot- , belaying- and
climbing techniques which are the base of every type of mountain activity such as Vie ferrate (iron/ladder paths
or even ice climbing). We prefer to perform our courses with a small number of participants in order to provide a
maximum of service and success for each beginning climber. Thus the Mountain Guide can concentrate on each
participant individually, he can evaluate and correct possible mistakes and contribute to make a large progress
in climbing. You may ask our Guide for advice regarding any type of alpine activity.
ADVANCED CLIMBER' S COURSE AT LAKE GARDA AND KALYMNOS ISLAND IN GREECE
The goal of most participants in 'advanced courses' is to go climbing independently and to "lead" In the
beginning of the course we still climb top-rope on difficult routes trying to reach the limit our your climbing
capacity with the objective to attain a higher climbing degree, to correct possible mistakes and to refine your
climbing technique. Next step in the course is advanced rope and climbing techniques for climbers who are
leading. The success of the course depends of course on the participants' prior experience and a small number of
participants (two or max . three persons); upon request it is also possible to do multi-pitch routes.
PERSONAL INTENSIVE ROCK CLIMBING COURSE
With max. 2 participants you can benefit from the didactic capacity of our mountain guide who can look back upon
20 years of teaching climbing in our Alpine School of Arco. It is possible to choose the dates, the number
of rock climbing days as well as the venues, difficulty degrees and didactical preferences. One mountain
guide with two guests is an ideal group for a multi-pitch route up to 400 m with ca. 12 pitches.
INFORMATION AND RESERVATION FOR ROCK CLIMBING COURSES, PERSONAL TUITION, INSTRUCTION
Any
type of requests as well as reservations should be made at least 20 days by e-mal (guide@alpinguide.com) prior to the start of the course with our Alpine School
of Arco. You should indicate the number of participants, possible prior mountaineering experience as well as any
information necessary to guarantee a successful and efficient course.
ROCK CLIMBING EQUIPMENT
All the material which is necessary for climbing will be made available free of charge by our Mountain Guides
(this includes as well climbing shoes, harness, helmet). This service is included in our prices. If you need help
choosing the suitable equipment, the Guides may give you some good piece of advice.
WHAT HAPPENS, IF IT RAINS ...???
Sometimes it even rains in Arco Lake Garda Italy ...! It goes without saying that the 'lost' climbing days due to
rain, will either be made up for or will be deducted from the total price.

About Marmolada (m. 3.343)
Marmolada (the Italian name; also Ladin: Marmoleda, German:
Marmolata) is a mountain in northeastern Italy (just east of Trento) and the highest mountain of the Dolomites (a
section of the Alps).
The mountain is located about 70 miles north-northeast of Venice, from which it can be seen on a clear day. It
consists of a ridge running west to east. Towards the south it breaks suddenly into sheer cliffs, forming a rock
face several kilometres long. On the north side there is a comparatively flat glacier, the only large glacier in
the Dolomites (the Marmolada Glacier, Ghiacciaio della Marmolada).
The ridge is composed of several summits, decreasing in altitude from west to east: Punta Penia (3,343 m), Punta
Rocca (3,309 m), Punta Ombretta (3,230 m), Monte Serauta (3,069 m), and Pizzo Serauta (3,035 m). An aerial
tramway goes to the top of Punta Rocca.
Paul Grohmann made the first ascent in 1864, along the north route.
Before World War I, the border between Austria and Italy ran over Marmolada, so it formed part of the front line.
Austrian soldiers were quartered in deep tunnels bored into the northern face's glacier, and Italian soldiers
were quartered on the south face's rocky precipices. As glaciers retreat, soldiers' remains and belongings are
occasionally discovered.
The Dolomites
The Dolomites in Italy (Italian: Dolomiti; German: Dolomiten) are
a section of the Alps. They are located for the most in the province of Belluno, the rest in the
provinces of Bolzano-Bozen and Trento (all in north-eastern Italy). Conventionally they extend from the Adige
river in the west to the Piave valley (Pieve di Cadore) in the east, the northern and southern borders are
defined by the Puster Valley (Val Pusteria) and the Sugana Valley (Val Sugana). But the Dolomites spread also
over the Piave river (Dolomiti d'Oltrepiave) to the east; and far away over the Adige river to the west is the
Brenta Group (Western Dolomites); there is also another smaller group called Piccole
Dolomiti (Small Dolomites) located between the Provinces of Trento and Vicenza.
One national park and many other regional parks are located in the Dolomites.
During the First World War the line between the Italian and Austro-Hungarian forces ran through the Dolomites.
There are open air war museums at Cinque Torri (Five Towers) and Mount Lagazuoi. Many people visit the Dolomites
to climb the Vie ferrate. These are protected paths which were first created in the Dolomites during the First
World War. A number of long distance footpaths run across the Dolomites, which are called "Alte vie" (i.e., high
paths). Such long trails, which are numbered from 1 to 8, require at least a week to be walked through and are
served by numerous "Rifugi" (huts). The first and, perhaps, most renowned is the Alta Via 1.
The region is commonly divided into the Western (Dolomiti di Brenta) and Eastern Dolomites,
separated by a line following the Valle dell' Adige. The range includes more than forty glaciers.
The name "Dolomites" is derived from the famous French mineralogist Dodat Gratet de Dolomieu who was the first to
describe the rock, dolomite, a type of carbonate rock which is responsible for the characteristic shapes and
colour of these mountains.
A tourist mecca, the Dolomites are famous for skiing in the winter months and mountain
climbing, daily excursions, trekking, climbing and Base Jumping, as well as paragliding and hang gliding
in summer and late spring/early autumn. Free climbing has been a tradition in the Dolomites since 1887, when
17-year-old Georg Winkler soloed the first ascent of the pinnacle Die Vajolettuerme. The main centres include:
Rocca Pietore alongside the Marmolada glacier, which lies on the border of the Trentino-Alto Adige and Veneto
regions, the small towns of Alleghe, Cortina d'Ampezzo, and the villages of Arabba, Ortisei and San Martino di
Castrozza, as well as the whole of the Fassa, Gardena and Badia Valleys.
Lake Garda
Garda Trentino Italy: the
first region with a Mediterranean climate and flora that you find in Europe travelling south Lake
Garda brings us the gift of a last and unexpected breath of Mediterranean before reaching the
passageways of the Dolomites heading north. Here, the intense blue of Lake
Garda touches the mountains; the olive branches speak with the wind, and the lemons mature in the sun.
At one time, Goethe, Kafka, Mann and Rilke found inspiration for their genius precisely here, in the Garda
Trentino. Today, the same atmosphere and natural beauty has remained intact and has become the ideal scenario for
a vacation where it is both easy to relax and have fun: sailing and
wind surfing on the waves of Lake Garda, mountain biking, trekking and
rock climbing the mountainsor canyoning along exciting torrent rapids are just
some of the daily sports in a world where it is easy to run into old castles and where fairy tales are celebrated
every year on magic, mid-summer's night. Popular activities include windsurfing on nearby Lake Garda, and
rock climbing. World Cup climbing competitions are held on the towns outdoor artificial wall of
Arco Lake Garda Trentino Italy. Mountainbiking is popular and international bikers flock to the
towns around Lake Garda. Garda Trentino is all that: a world at man's dimensions where the flavours of food, wine
and olive oil are real.
